Tata Motors game plan

Calcutta, Nov. 16: Tata Motors is looking to increase its market share in utility vehicles in the eastern region by launching the Tata Safari Storme and upgraded variant of the Aria this fiscal.

“It (Aria) will be launched very soonů within this fiscal,” Kumar Priyesh, regional manager (east), said at the launch of the updated sedan Manza here today.

The Aria, which was launched in 2010, has not been able to generate volume because of its high price thereby losing out to strong competition from Toyota’s Innova that dominates the rapidly growing segment.

The updated variant of the car is likely to be priced rationally.

Tata Motors is also looking to roll out the sports utility vehicle Safari Storme in the eastern region by the end of this fiscal. Following the launches, the car maker is eyeing a growth of around 5-10 per cent in its market share from 25 per cent.

The company also expects a growth in Nano sales in the east. Priyesh said the company was hoping to sell more than 600 units of the small car per month in Bengal by the end of this fiscal compared with 400 units at present.

On whether the company will invest in the state, Priyesh said he was not the right person to comment on this.

Tata Motors’ global sales rose 6 per cent in October to 1,00,660 units over the same period last year.

Sales of premium brands from Jaguar Land Rover rose 7 per cent to 27,897 units.

Total vehicles sales stood at 49,264 units, a fall of 5 per cent from the same month last year.

Commercial vehicle sales were up by 19 per cent to 51,396 units from the same month last year, it added.
