Rebels gun down BJP leader

Ranchi, Nov. 15: Three persons, including a BJP block president, were killed by armed rebels in separate incidents in Simdega and Khunti districts late yesterday night.

Saryu Yadav, president of BJP’s Simdega block committee, was gunned down by suspected PLFI rebels at his house in Banihara village under sadar police station.

Around 30 men surrounded his house and ordered him to come out. When he refused, the rebels broke open the wooden doors and barged in, before opening fire on Yadav.

The BJP member died on the spot, while his wife Kamla Devi sustained bullet injuries when she tried to come to his rescue. “She has been sent to RIMS in Ranchi for proper medical treatment. Her condition is reported to be critical,” said Simdega superintendent of police (SP) Jatin Narwal.

Yadav was the third BJP block president in the district who fell prey to extremists in the last six years.

Meanwhile, suspected Maoists dragged out one Narayan Munda from his house at Barihada under Arki police station of Khunti and killed him, charging him of acting as an informer. At Seramdih village under Khunti police station, para-teacher Wiliam Nag was killed in an identical manner.

“Though it is not clear whether Nag was killed by rebel outfits in the area, we suspect either CPI(Maoist) or PLFI,” said Khunti SP A.N. Mishra.
