Calcutta, Nov. 15: An industry chamber of Bangladesh is planning to prepare a report on boosting trade among Saarc nations by lowering non-tariff barriers.

“The popular hypothesis by trade economists is that if non-tariff measures are minimised, if not eliminated totally, there is a possibility of a substantial increase in trade. But, there has not been any structural study on that. So this is an attempt to do that,” Shaquib Quoreshi, secretary of Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Dhaka, said here today.

He said, “The intra-region trade in Saarc (South Asian Association of Regional Co-operation) is under five per cent of the global trade of this region with other countries. This has remained stagnant for many years.”

The report will take into account the non-tariff barriers among eight member nations in the form of embargo, licenses and product certification that are hindering the growth of trade.
