One killed in police firing

Jorhat, Nov. 13: A 45-year-old man was killed in police firing late this evening on the outskirts of Dibrugarh district following a raid on a gambling den.

A mob of about 100 persons, armed with machetes, axes and iron rods attacked the policemen, prompting them to open fire.

The deceased has been identified as Mahendra Sonowal of Lalmati Tinsukia village under Borbaruah police station of Dibrugarh district.

Borbaruah police station officer-in-charge Dibyajyoti Dutta was injured in the incident and has been admitted to AMCH, Dibruagarh.

Dibrugarh superintendent of police Arabinda Kalita told The Telegraph the police were forced to fire in self-defence.
