Suri hospital gunman in custody

Ashis Dey being taken to Suri court

Suri, Nov. 12: Ashis Dey, who was caught on CCTV waving a gun inside a Suri private hospital, was nabbed last night and conflicting accounts have emerged on his arrest.

Birbhum police officially said they chased Ashis after a tip-off and nabbed him on a road in Suri. Trinamul and police sources claimed that party leaders talked him into surrendering.

Ashis and his aide Raja Chowdhury have been remanded in five days’ police custody.

Yesterday, after the November 9 CCTV footage was aired on ABP Ananda, Trinamul leaders said Ashis had been expelled from the party.

However, just two days before he waved his gun inside Swastik Hospital, Ashis was seen near a meeting venue of industries minister Partha Chatterjee in Suri.

An officer of Suri police station today said that a team raided Ashis’s house four times last night. “Around midnight, we got a tip-off that Dey and Raja had been spotted near SP More in Suri. We rushed there. They tried to run away but we caught the two after a chase,” said Murlidhar, the Birbhum superintendent of police.

However, the sources said Ashis was not pursued but persuaded to surrender. “Ashis had fled after the CCTV footage was beamed. Some party leaders put pressure on the police to arrest him. Ashis was contacted through a Trinamul leader. We persuaded him to surrender,” the police source said.

Suri MLA Swapan Ghosh said: “I called up the inspector in charge of Suri police station after seeing the footage. The arrest has saved the face of the government.”

A section of Trinamul leaders said district president Anubrata Mondal also told the police to arrest Ashis.
