Calcutta: Defending champions Indian Oil and Punjab National Bank set up a summit clash at the 117th Beighton Cup here on Saturday.
In the semi-finals played at SAI artificial turf, Indian Oil thrashed Army XI 7-2, while Punjab National Bank (PNB) got the better of Air India 5-2.
Army XI drew first blood through Rinel Singh’s ninth-minute goal but last year’s winners bounced back with back-to-back strikes from Deepak Thakur (18th) and Roshan Minz (26th) to lead 2-1 at halftime.
After the breather, former international Prabhjot Singh struck a hat-trick (56th, 58th and 60th), while Gurjinder Singh scored a brace (47th and 69th) to complete the rout.
Army reduced the margin in the 61st minute when an Indian Oil defender scored an own goal. The first semi-final though was a big upset. Air India were clueless against PNB .
The likes of Arjun Halappa, VS Vinay, Bimal Lakra, Sameer Dad and Prabodh Tirkey were made to chase shadows by PNB. But it was Air India who shot into the lead through VS Vinay in the 18th minute. PNB restored parity six minutes later through Jitender Sahora.
