Sri Lankans clinch series

Hambantota: Dinesh Chandimal and Kumar Sangakkara shared an 87-run partnership to lead Sri Lanka to a seven-wicket win over New Zealand in a rain-hit fourth one-day International on Saturday.

The win gives Sri Lanka an unassailable 3-0 lead in the five-match series with one match left. Put into bat, New Zealand made 131 for 8 after the match was reduced to 32 overs because of rain at Mahinda Rajapaksa Stadium.

Dinesh Chandimal (43), Kumar Sangakkara (42 not out) and Upul Tharanga (27) were the main scorers as Sri Lanka achieved the target with more than five overs to spare.

In what turned out to be a comfortable victory, Jeevan Mendis stood out for his triple-strike in a space of five deliveries that hurt New Zealand’s prospects at a time when they were seeking to lend some stability to their innings. New Zealand suffered their tenth defeat in 11 completed ODIs since February this year.
