Shri Ram student ‘suicide’ after tiff

New Delhi, Nov. 10: A 22-year-old student of Shri Ram College of Commerce plunged to his death from a third-floor balcony of a north Delhi apartment this morning, moments after a “heated argument” with his girlfriend, police said.

Investigators suspect Abhishek Saikia, whose home is in Assam, committed suicide.

“It seems to be a case of suicide. Abhishek allegedly leapt off the third floor of the building where he was staying as a tenant. Apparently, he took the fatal leap moments after an altercation with his girlfriend who is a second-year student of Hindu College,” DCP (north-west) P. Karunakaran said.

Abhishek was a third-year student of Shri Ram College.

Police sources said they were also probing whether he fell off the balcony accidentally. “We are probing that angle as well after one of the residents of the building said Abhishek was in a foul mood and may have slipped and fell accidentally. But it seems unlikely. There are no eyewitnesses,” said an officer investigating the case.

A preliminary probe has revealed that Abhishek had a heated exchange with his girlfriend, who had come to see him in the morning. .

“They had a heated argument soon after she reached his flat. After some time, both came out. They even argued on the staircase for a while. Both started shouting at each other,” the officer added. The girl then left in a huff.

“The neighbours heard a thud as soon as the girl left the building,” the officer said.

DCP Karunakaran said the police had informed Abhishek’s parents and they would be reaching the capital tonight.
