Cell shock at Sakchi shop

Burglars broke into a mobile phone shop on the ground floor of a highly secured building housing Hotel All Seasons and decamped with 105 brand new handsets worth Rs 3.5 lakh.

The incident took place at Cell World, located in the busy Aambagan area in Sakchi, in the small hours of Friday. One of the locks was found broken and the shutter twisted.

The theft was discovered around 9.30am by owner Mohammed Farid. “I found the shutter bent on one side. When I stepped inside, the shelves were all empty. I informed police,” he said.

Since the shop is located in a densely populated area and a night guard remains posted at the entrance of Hotel All Seasons, the incident has caused a stir in the business circuit.

Sakchi OC inspector Bijay Kumar inspected the spot. He also visited Hotel All Seasons and spoke to some members of staff as well as the night guard. “Investigations are on. We are clueless about how the criminals managed to pull this off,” he said.

This is the second major burglary to have taken place in Sakchi market area within a month. In October, ornaments worth over Rs 5 lakh were stolen from a jewellery shop.

In another incident that also took place in the wee hours of Friday, criminals made off with gold and silver jewellery worth over Rs 1 lakh from a house at Sankusai in Olidih police station area.

Olidih OC Mahesh Kumar Prasad said that the house owner had informed them about the theft, but was yet to lodge an FIR.

“The entire family was away. On returning on Friday morning, they found the main door’s lock broken and ornaments missing from the almirah,” Prasad added.
