Nearly 3,000 operators of “contract carriage” buses have threatened to go on an indefinite strike from November 22 if the transport department continues with its policy of not issuing inter-district permits in Calcutta, Howrah and North and South 24-Parganas.
The operators have been pressing for a change in the existing policy for months.
“According to the transport department’s policy, a bus can’t carry office-goers from Garia to Sector V,” said Himadri Ganguly, the secretary of the West Bengal Contract Carriage Owners’ and Operators Association.
Officials said the curb would be lifted. “We will soon issue an order scrapping the restrictions,” said an official of the transport department.
