Councillor suicide under dowry cloud

New Delhi, Nov. 8 (PTI): A young Delhi municipal councillor allegedly murdered her one-and-half-year-old daughter before committing suicide at her west Delhi residence early this morning.

The family of 26-year-old Satyam Yadav alleged that she took the extreme step because of dowry harassment.

Satyam, a Congress councillor from Nangloi East in the North Delhi Municipal Corporation, was found hanging from the ceiling of her room where daughter Vanishka was found murdered, police said.

The incident came to light when Satyam’s sister-in-law entered the room in the morning. Satyam’s husband was with his mother at the time as she was not keeping well. The councillor’s husband Pawan Yadav is a college teacher.

The police said the reason why Satyam took the step is not known, adding that they were investigating the matter as no suicide note was found.

Investigators said it appeared that the councillor strangulated her daughter before hanging herself.

“We can tell definitely how the girl was killed only after post-mortem,” the officer said.

Satyam’s family alleged that her in-laws had demanded Rs 10 lakh and a car from them and were not allowing them to meet her.

“We went to Delhi to bring her to Bulandshahr for an event. But they refused to let her come and said they would not leave her until the money is paid,” her brother alleged.
