Imphal, Nov. 7: A. Naoba of Thoubal district today defeated L. Suresh Singh of Imphal East to enter the final in the boys’ section of the inter-school boxing championship being held at Khuman Lampak sports complex here.
In other bouts, Sh. Barun of Bishnupur district got the better of Th. Bikramjit of Thoubal, Kh. Manimatung of Imphal East defeated T. Kelon of Imphal West, while Ksh. Shusanta of Imphal East beat L. Gregary of Tamenglong.
In the under-17 girls’ (53-56kg category) semi-final match, Th. Shanti of Imphal East defeated Th. Bobina of Bishnupur for a place in the final.
The final bouts will be held tomorrow.
The event is being organised by the Manipur youth affairs and sports department.
Students from all the nine districts of Manipur are taking part in the competition.
The referees who officiated the games were impressed by the talent and performance of the participants.
“I cannot believe children could perform at such a high level. I am sure they have been inspired by the exploits of Mary Kom,” a referee, who did not wish to named, said.
Mary Kom had won a bronze medal in the London Olympics and she has become an inspiration for young children not only in Manipur but all over the country as well.
“Mary Kom is an inspiration for all of us. I may not be able to fight at her level at present. However, I always try to give my best,” T. Premi of Bishnupur district, who also entered the final in the girls’ section, said.
