Jinarani strikes gold

- Rejected by Manipur, lifter thanks Nagaland

Imphal, Nov. 2: Nagaland lifter H. Jinarani bagged the first gold medal in the 76th Men and 20th Women Eastern India Weighlifting Championship, which began at the SAI-Special Area Games hall here today.

Jinarani lifted the gold in the womenís 48kg category lifting 121kg (53 and 68). Manipurís lifter P. Ganga won the silver lifting 119 kg (53 and 66) while Bina Das of Tripura secured the bronze with 100kg (45 and 55).

Jinarani has reason to be happy. She is from Imphal and plays for Imphal SAI. In the trial she lost to Ganga and decided to represent Nagaland.

ďI am grateful to Nagaland for allowing me to represent the state. The credit for my gold goes to Nagaland,Ē she said. The womenís section will have competitions in seven categories.

In the menís 56kg category Mizoramís T. Lacchhanhima and Lalzuidika won the gold and silver medals respectively by lifting 200 kg (90 and110) and 187 kg (82 and 105) respectively.

Arunachal Pradeshís Tingchat Wangsu bagged the silver with 183 kg (81 and 102). The menís section will have competitions in eight categories.

Altogether 140 competitors from host state Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Mizoram. Meghalaya, Tripura, West Bengal and Bihar are taking part in the championship.

Basketball: Eastern Railway Calcutta and South East Central Railway, Bilaspur men and women registered victories in their respective group league matches on the second day of the 55th Men & 36th Women All India Railway Basketball Championship at NFRSA Stadium here on Friday.

Physical culture: The Guwahati District Physical Culture Association will organise the 32nd Guwahati district weightlifting, powerlifting and body-building championships at Kamrup Byam Samity here on November 24.
