Adhir sweets

Behrampore, Nov. 2: If Deepa Das Munshi and Abu Hasem Khan Choudhury today reminded Mamata Banerjee of bitter home truths, their ministry colleague in Delhi sent sweets for inmates of a jail that had been his home several times.

Central junior railway minister Adhir Chowdhury sent 10,000 rosogollas to Behrampore Central Correctional Home (central jail), where he had been lodged in connection with several murder cases. The Congress MP, who served time as undertrial, has been acquitted in all the cases.

Correctional home superintendent R.N. Chakraborty said each inmate got four rosogollas. “There are around 2,200 undertrials and convicts here. The jail staff also had the sweets. They were all very happy,” Chakraborty said.

A district Congress leader said: “After being sworn in minister, Adhirda asked us to send the sweets to the prisoners.”

Most Murshidabad Congress leaders refused comment, saying the party did not want to publicise the issue.

Repeated calls to Adhir’s phone went unanswered. The minister is in Delhi now.
