Bagan rout Kalighat

Calcutta: Mohun Bagan registered a fine 4-1 win over Pincon Kalighat Club in a Calcutta Football League Premier Division match at the Salt Lake Stadium here on Thursday.

Taking the field minus goal-machine Odafa Okolie, the likes of Manish Bhargav, Manish Maithani, and Snehashish Chakraborty starred for Bagan to ensure that the reserve bench too is gradually readying itself for sterner tests ahead.

Bagan went on to the lead as early as in the second minute. Denson Devadas initiated the move by passing to Stanley, who, in turn, set it up for Maithani. And the midfielder obliged with a right-footer.

Seven minutes later, Bagan doubled their lead, courtesy rival goalkeeper Amit Nandy’s bungle. Anil Kumar, having positioned himself perfectly, made full use of Bhargav’s long-ranger that Nandy spilled to prod it home.

Kalighat, though, refused to get bogged down as their spirited display enabled them to reduce the margin through Shin Ho Sung after the half-hour mark. Effecting a solid interception, the Korean unleashed a pile-driver that beat the outstretched Shilton Paul to find the back of the net.

Kalighat even came close to find the equaliser, but the rub of the green just did not go their way as a header from Emmanuel Ini struck the upright.

Nonetheless, it was Bhargav’s 69th minute strike that allowed Bagan to regain control of the game. After receiving a ball on the right flank, Manish instantly shot from the edge of the box to perfection much to the delight of the 1,200-odd supporters.

With 15 minutes to go for regulation time, Snehashish Chakraborty completed the rout with a left-footer.
