Malda, Oct. 31: A Congress councillor of Englishbazar municipality today said that if civic chief Krishnendu Chowdhury joined Trinamul then several others in the party would “definitely back him”, which could lead to the Congress losing control of the board.
“If Kishanda (Krishnendu) joins Trinamul, we are all behind him. He will continue to remain the municipality chairman,” said Ashis Kundu, the councillor of ward 18 and a known Krishnendu acolyte.
Perhaps to play it safe, he added: “I have not yet decided whether or not to join Trinamul. I will speak to my voters and Congress leaders in my ward and take a decision.”
The Congress has 10 councillors in the 25-member municipality and almost all of them are Krishnendu loyalists. While seven wards are with Trinamul, the remaining eight are with the Left.
Krishnendu announced his decision to join Trinamul last week. “I am confident that as soon as I join Trinamul, the Congress councillors will support me,” he said. Sources said six councillors were close to the civic chief.
Malda Congress president Abu Hasem Khan Choudhury said: “Those who are leaving the Congress should have resigned (from their posts) first and sought the verdict of the people.”
