Imphal, Oct. 30: Manipur’s annual tourism festival will introduce a new and exciting range of adventure sport to attract more tourists during the 10-day tourism fair called Sangai festival.
Sangai festival is an annual event organised by the state tourism department to promote tourism by showcasing the virgin lands, hills, culture, handloom and handicrafts and rich art and culture of Manipur.
The festival, which will begin on November 21 and continue till November 30, will have various cultural troupes drawn from ethnic communities.
Health institutes will also showcase their expertise to promote health tourism.
It will also have a stall, where all the traditional food items of different communities will be available.
However, the adventure and water sport are likely to be the main attractions of the festival.
The tourism department involved the Manipur Mountaineering and Trekking Association to handle the adventure sport.
“This time, we have introduced new things like water skiing, sailboats and wind surfing. We are also introducing exciting games like water zorbing, land zorbing and sumo zorbing fight,” Chandrakumar Singh, secretary of the association, said.
Water sport such as skiing and surfing will be held at the Takmu Water Sports Complex inside Loktak, the largest fresh water lake in the Northeast.
The lake is in Bishnupur district, about 45km from Imphal.
The water sport participants will also have the opportunity to visit the nearby Indian National Army Memorial Complex, which houses the remains of World War II.
The INA soldiers led by Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose hoisted the Tricolour at the Moirang complex in 1944.
A traditional boat race will also be conducted at the water sports complex and will be organised in two categories.
Individuals between the age group of 35 and 50 years can participate in the senior category, while candidates between 16 and 34 years can take part in the junior category.
People interested in trekking will also have enough activities, as the association will organise trekking to Mount Iso, the highest peak in Manipur and Dzuko valley, both in Senapati district.
The association plans to take 50 trekkers on a six-day tour of the area.
There will also be another trekking expedition in Ukhrul and Churachandpur districts.
The zorbing games would be held at Hafta Kangjeibung on the palace compound, which is the main venue of the festival, in Imphal city.
