Kohima, Oct. 30: The department of new and renewable energy unveiled three solar motorcycles and a mobile exhibition van here today.
The solar bikes will be used for official work by the department. The department has also installed several solar streetlights in Kohima town and is expected to install more such lights with the arrival of the festive season. The department also distributes solar lamps and solar water heaters in villages at subsided rates as an effort to save the environment.
MLA Deo Nukhu, advisor to the new and renewable energy, science and technology and art and culture departments, unveiled the vehicles at a ceremony here. He said the purpose behind introducing them was to demonstrate the initiatives of the department in protecting the environment.
The joint director of the department, Er Kavito Chishi, chaired the programme, which was attended by other officers and staff.
Popularising such vehicles would be economically prudent, he said while also expressing his gratitude to the Centre for funds. Nukhu also thanked the director and officials of the new and renewable energy department.
Being a new department, the public isnít aware of its activities, the director of the new and renewable energy department said. He hoped that todayís launch would enlighten people more about solar energy and its advantages in daily life. The solar bikes, which will be used for the departmentís work, are zero maintenance and non-polluting, he added.
