Teen rape charge on footballer

Calcutta, Oct. 30: A footballer and a cook were arrested tonight on the charge of raping a 14-year-old girl after luring her to a highrise apartment on Jessore Road.

One of the arrested is Jagpreet Singh, who claimed to be an East Bengal footballer. East Bengal does have a midfielder named Jagpreet but it was not clear till late night whether the arrested suspect is the same person. The other arrested person is a cook.

Two other suspects, including the apartment owner Baljit Singh Sahni, are absconding. The apartment is located in Diamond City North near Shyamnagar.

According to the complaint, Baljit had called the girl, who lives in a nearby slum and works as a domestic help, to his Tower 2 flat for household chores on Monday. Jagpreet and a friend — apparently frequent visitors — Baljit and his cook Ravi Singh allegedly raped the girl.

The girl confided in her family members at night. On Tuesday evening, people from the neighbourhood, led by the victim’s father, reached the apartment block. After a scuffle with the guards, the protesters beat up Baljit and his friends, according to a flat owner.

The girl’s father lodged a complaint at Dum Dum police station and Jagpreet and Ravi were arrested around midnight. Baljit and the fourth suspect escaped in the melee, sources said.
