Arms dealers arrested by BSF

Shillong, Oct. 29: Three alleged arms smugglers were arrested by the BSF yesterday on the Indo-Bangladesh border, while a Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) linkman was also apprehended.

BSF troops of Dulainalah border outpost deployed in Meghalaya’s East Khasi Hills district apprehended two Indian arms smugglers who were identified as Oleshwae Hojan, and S. Marak, both 45, while they were trying to cross over to Bangladesh yesterday around 345pm.

During the preliminary interrogation, they said one smuggler managed to flee from the spot at the time of apprehension. Subsequently, based on the information provided by Hojan, a joint operation was launched by Meghalaya police and the BSF jawans of Purananagar border outpost.

The security forces later arrested the third smuggler, identified as Bresh Marak alias Rawan, 37, from his house. One revolver, five rounds of live ammunition, two wire-cutters, two mobile phones with three Indian and one Bangladeshi SIM cards, one bicycle and Rs 1,575 besides other items were seized from their possession.

In a separate incident, BSF troops from Chandaboi border outpost in the West Garo Hills yesterday apprehended an alleged GNLA linkman identified as Dansalrang Brahnoa hailing from Assam’s Goalpara district while he was trying to cross the border to Bangladesh.

The security personnel also seized one GNLA demand note, a mobile phone with two Indian SIM cards and Rs 210 from him.

All the apprehended persons were handed over to police stations for further interrogation.
