Bokaro police, led by DSP B. Kullu, seized more than 5.75 lakh pouches of countrymade liquor worth Rs 60 lakh from a closed cinema located on the highway connecting Chandankyari and Purulia road, about 25km from Bokaro steel city, on Monday.
A few thousand of these pouches are quite old, the batch numbers showing they were manufactured in 2011.
The seizure has triggered speculations that countrymade liquor was being illegally hoarded. However, sources claimed that the liquor was issued in name of six shops and the owners decided to illegally store the same at Deo Talkies without the permission of authorities.
Excise assistant commissioner, Bokaro, Kaushal Kumar said: “The pouches belong to about five-six shops that have licence to sell countrymade liquor. However, they don’t have a place to stock the liquor and decided to store the same at the cinema without requisite permission.”
