A man in his late 30s died and three were injured on Sunday morning after the driver of a mini-truck lost control over his vehicle and hit them before ramming into a tailor’s shop on BL Saha Road in Behala.

The deceased, Ramen Mandal, an accountant at a private firm, was on his way to the local market when the accident occurred. He was declared dead in hospital. The injured, including an eight-year-old girl, were admitted to MR Bangur Hospital.

The driver of the killer vehicle and his two aides were handed over to police by residents. “We have conducted a blood test to find out if the three were drunk. The mini-truck has been impounded,” said an officer of Behala police station.

The owner of the tailoring shop, Mohammad Abbas, had a narrow escape. “I was about to reach my shop in five minutes,” said Abbas.

Babla Mandal, who lives behind the shop, said he had heard a loud noise. “I rushed there to find a man lying in a pool of blood and the others groaning in pain. The mini-truck’s windscreen and the shutter of the shop were damaged,” he said.

The cement-laden mini-truck was headed towards Siriti from Mahabirtala.

Residents blocked the road for 30 minutes from 8.45am, demanding a restriction on movement of goods vehicles on the thoroughfare between 6am and 10pm. The blockade was withdrawn after senior police officers assured them of considering the demand.
