Greater Noida: Australian Mark Webber, Sebastian Vettel’s teammate in Red Bull Racing, isn’t quite sure how to react to Sachin Tendulkar being conferred the Member of the Order of Australia, a “very special honour,” as Prime Minister Julia Gillard put it last week.
“Frankly, I wasn’t aware that foreigners could get this honour... I have, of course, since been informed that others such as (Sir) Garry Sobers and Brian Lara have also been conferred the same Order...
“Sachin’s done a lot for cricket and for relations between Australia and India, but when a Matthew Hayden gets critical, it’s not that he’s against Sachin... No...
“The issue is whether a foreigner should get that honour,” Webber, No.5 on the drivers’ standings, told The Telegraph on Thursday.
Webber, who says it straight, did quickly add that he was himself a “Sachin fan,” having even watched him in person.
Footnote: Sauber’s Sergio Perez has fallen ill. A statement from the team said: “He’s got a bad cold and needs to rest.”
