Shillong set for Durga Puja

Shillong, Oct. 20: A slew of programmes have been chalked out by the Central Puja Committee for Durga Puja.

Tomorrow morning, children from SOS village, Umiam, will stage a cultural show at a pandal on Jail Road, general secretary of the committee J.L. Das said.

On Monday, S.K. Das Memorial drum beat competition and the Prasad Gupta Memorial Traditional Khasi drum beat competition will be held at Jail Road where winners in both categories will be given cash prizes.

The committee has planned a programme at the Nartiang Durga temple in West Jaintia Hills on Tuesday. Bus services have been arranged for devotees who would like to visit the temple.

Leaders of various religious denominations, prominent NGOs, social activists and academicians will visit Puja pandals to promote harmony among citizens of the city.

The committee has requested for buses from Shillong Public Transport Service for plying up to 11.30pm from tomorrow till Tuesday to facilitate visitors of greater Shillong.

On Tuesday, the committee will distribute sweets and gifts among children at different orphanages in the city.
