PRE PUJA

She power: Governor M.K. Narayanan inaugurated Maha Durga Utsab, a kantha exhibition by the women of SHE (Self Help Enterprise), at ITC Sonar Calcutta on Thursday. The depiction of goddess Durga on the kantha panels was “creativity at its best”, said Narayanan. “SHE has not only served to empower rural women and give them an income but also delivered such lovely works of art. There is a divinity in the fingers that have done this work,” he added. For Shamlu Dudeja, who conceptualised the exhibition, it was about every woman’s Durga. “If you see the work of these craftswomen, Durga is not on a pedestal to be worshipped but is someone who is their own,” said the kantha revivalist, flanked by daughter Malika Varma (in picture left). Get puja-ready: The last pre-Puja stop for the Vaseline Pujo Ready zone was Avani Riverside Mall, Howrah, on Wednesday. Tolly actress June turned mentor-cum-judge for the evening, chatting with 10 young contestants on beauty and fashion. Kasturi Majumdar (in picture above with June), who has just completed her BBA, was declared the winner of the evening. “Durga Puja means fun, bingeing and dressing upů I have already started dressing up for the festivities! I love traditional weaves like Jamdani and I also wear lots of muslin and georgette. I will go traditional on all Puja days,” said June, dazzling in a scarlet sari and sequinned blouse. Winner Kasturi was all smiles. “I am overjoyed! This was so unexpected,” she giggled. Vaseline Pujo Ready, in association with Anandabazar Patrika, is looking for four women who are walking that extra mile to get ready for Durga Puja. If you’ve missed registration at the malls, get clicked at the Vaseline Pujo Ready zones at Labony Estate, 66 Pally, Howrah Mandirtala or Dum Dum Park Tarun Sangha. You could be among four lucky winners to get featured in Anandabazar Patrika and go on a dinner date with four Tollywood stars! Picture by Bhubaneswarananda Halder
