Nathu-la trade resumes

Gangtok, Oct. 18: Chinese traders resumed business in Nathu-la today after a day’s halt following a scuffle between a trader from China and an ITBP jawan at Sherathang mart yesterday.

The matter was resolved after the ITBP soldier wrote an apology to the Chinese traders. Yesterday, the Chinese trader and the ITBP guard got into a scuffle when the jawan told the Chinese man he should not park the vehicle at a gate of a border security camp.

“We were doubtful whether the Chinese would come after yesterday’s incident. The Indian traders were happy to see them,” said an Indian trader. According to sources at Nathu-la today, 30 vehicles with Chinese traders came in the morning to Sherathang.

The sources said the Chinese customs authorities have expressed resentment about the alleged manhandling of their trader by the ITBP soldier.

“We came to know from some of the Chinese traders that the custom officials across the border are not happy with the incident and have asked for an apology even to them by the ITBP or they would report the matter to the higher Chinese authorities” a source said.
