Petty crimes are on the rise in the steel city with the festive season round the corner.
On Thursday around 10am, two bike-borne criminals made an abortive attempt to snatch another two-wheeler from the Jubilee Park gate in Bistupur. The two chased a 24-year-old two-wheeler rider and dashed him from the side.
As the youth fell down, the pillion-rider of the bike assaulted the victim and snatched his vehicle. But as he was about to start the engine, the victim raised an alarm and a passing police patrol stopped at the spot.
At the sight of the police, the bike rider sped away and his accomplice was caught.
Inspector A.K. Yadav of Bistupur police station said as the incident took place in broad daylight, they were probing whether it was a genuine attempt at snatching or the fallout of another incident. “We have nabbed the suspect and are interrogating him. We will arrest the accused only after nabbing the bike rider,” Yadav said.
In another incident, two pickpockets were arrested from a Bistupur market on Thursday. Both are minors.
Late on Wednesday night, the two-wheeler of a woman was snatched by bike-borne criminals on Kadma-Ulyan Road.
The incident took place while the victim was returning home to Ulyan with her minor son as pillion-rider.
On Monday afternoon, a woman was relieved of her gold chain worth over Rs 50,000 in a Sakchi market.
SSP Akhilesh Kumar Jha admitted that incidents of snatching were on the rise.
