Molest after parking row

A couple was allegedly beaten up and the woman molested by a group of local people after an altercation over parking their car in front of a house at Azadgarh in Tollygunge on Thursday morning.

Around 9.15am, the couple had parked their car in front of a house near GD Birla school in Tollygunge, where they had gone to drop their daughter.

“When I returned to the car, the man in front of whose house I had parked my Santro started abusing me,” said the man, a local trader. “I apologised but he slapped me. Two others began punching me.”

The trader, in a complaint lodged with Jadavpur police station, identified his attacker as Ranjit. He said the men molested his wife when she tried to interfere. The trader alleged more men teamed up to attack them. “One of them identified himself as Bapi Mitra and said he was the local leader of a political party. He said he would set our car ablaze if we parked it there in future,” the trader said.

Mitra is the president of the Azadgarh Colony Committee, Metro later learnt.

Basak’s alleged tormentors have denied any wrongdoing. “Guardians park their cars in front of our homes for a long time each day. Some residents had requested them not to do so, at which they abused and hit us,” said Subrata Chowdhury, the secretary of Azadgarh Colony Committee.

Police have started a case of assault, wrongful constraint and molestation.

Mitra later lodged a counter-complaint of assault against the trader.

“We are investigating the matter,” said an officer of Jadavpur police station.
