Boy ‘hit’ for stepping out of class

A Class XII student at a government school in Barasat has developed temporary partial deafness after his teachers allegedly hit him for staying out of class without permission.

Seikh Saddam Hussein, 18, a student at Aswinipally High School, claimed he had gone out of class during the fourth period on Wednesday to fill up his water bottle, as he was thirsty. He couldn’t seek permission because the teacher hadn’t yet come, he added.

The boy said he had gone to a ground-floor tap but it was dry. “I was climbing back when I met Bijay Chatterjee, the assistant headmaster,” he said.

Saddam said Chatterjee rebuked him for stepping out of the classroom. Saddam tried to reason with him but was allegedly slapped. More teachers came to the spot and took him to the ground-floor room of the principal, Shyamsunder Pal, the boy claimed.

Saddam’s father said his son complained of acute ear pain at night. He took the boy to Barasat District Hospital on Thursday. Doctors who treated Saddam said the boy had suffered an injury in his left eardrum.

Saddam’s father has lodged a complaint with Barasat police station.

“We are investigating the complaint,” said Sugata Sen, the superintendent of police, North 24-Parganas.

The school authorities have denied any teacher hit the boy.
