Strip and confinement for ASI after ‘molest’ bid

Balurghat, Oct. 17: A police officer was confined to a house for two hours and reportedly stripped by people when he allegedly tried to molest a homemaker at Gopalpur near Harirampur last night.

The woman today filed a complaint against Manijul Islam, an assistant sub inspector at the Harirampur police station. The South Dinajpur police chief has ordered an inquiry against Manijul.

The 32-year-old woman’s husband said she had gone to the police station yesterday in connection with a property case filed against him by his father.

“The ASI made an indecent proposal to my wife. I wasn’t there and she told me what had happened at the police station. The police officer came to my house around 10pm yesterday and as I was aware of his intention, I didn’t appear before him. Manijul entered my house and made indecent gestures to my wife. When my wife resisted, he tried to grab her. She screamed and I came out of the room. Neighbours also rushed to our house. When we asked Manijul why he had come to our house, he threatened us. The people became furious and confined him to our house,” said the woman’s husband.

Sources said Manijul was intoxicated and the villagers had tied up his hands with a rope.

“He was also stripped by the crowd,” said a source.

The ASI was rescued after two hours by a police team led by the inspector in charge of Harirampur police station.

The district police chief, Prasun Bhattacharya, said a written complaint had been filed with Harirampur police against the ASI. He said Gangarampur subdivisional police officer Narayan Majumdar would investigate the charge against Manijul.

“He has been asked to carry out the probe and send me a report immediately. If the ASI is found guilty, he won’t be spared,” said Bhattacharya.
