Handmade items up for grabs
- Two-day exhibition opens at Ranchi hotel

Festive finery like salwar suits, home décor like wall hangings and gift items like candles — eleventh-hour shoppers have one too many reasons to drop in at the two-day exhibition-cum-sale that kicked off at Radisson Blu near Kadru More on Wednesday.

Around 1,500 women entrepreneurs from Calcutta, Mumbai, Nagpur, Delhi and Jharkhand are showcasing their handmade products at the exhibition organised by Purshree, a wing of Deepshikha that works for the mentally challenged. Proceeds from the sales at the 40 kiosks will go towards the welfare of mentally challenged children.

“As many as 9,000 diyas have been designed by the mentally challenged children of Deepshikha. They come in vibrant colours and are priced at Rs 50 (set of 11 diyas),” said a member of Deepshikha.

Then, there are rangoli designs being sold by Ranchi-based Sonal Chauhan. “I am also selling handmade wall hangings and gift sets. All these items are available between Rs 50 and Rs 1,500,” she said.

Another young entrepreneur from Ranchi, Nidhi Wadhwani, is displaying wooden candle stands and frames while many others are selling home décor items. “Prices of the bouquets start from Rs 1,250. The flower pot shaped like a human figure is something new and uncommon and has been designed by me. It costs Rs 1,000,” said kiosk owner Sangeeta Bathwal.

Designer salwar suits from Calcutta, Delhi and Nagpur are the other top draws.

“All these salwar suits have been done by Pakistani designer Bashir Ahmed. Prices start from Rs 2,000,” said Prakriti of Ranchi, who is also selling floating candles for Rs 50 each.

Entry is free.
