A woman was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly stealing jewellery from a south Calcutta family worth Rs 5 lakh.
Homemaker Reshma Jindal, 34, who has two children, befriended complainant Dipak Kedia’s mother at an ashram, said an officer of Karaya police station.
The elderly woman invited Reshma to their home on Ahiripukur Road in Ballygunge, the officer added.
Reshma allegedly went to the Kedias’ home on October 10 and befriended the rest of the family members.
“She stayed for an hour. Six days later, the Kedias realised that gold and diamond jewellery were missing from a bedroom cupboard,” the officer said.
Dipak lodged a complaint with Karaya police station on Tuesday. In the complaint, Kedia said he suspected Reshma of the theft because she had gone to the bedroom saying she had been feeling unwell.
The police on Tuesday picked up Reshma from her home on Palm Avenue. “She admitted to the theft,” said an officer. The booty has been recovered, said the cops.
Police suspect Reshma of having carried out a similar theft from Bhowanipore a few years ago.
