First 3-star Bengal GOC

Ashok Kumar Choudhary

New Delhi, Oct. 16: Lt Gen. Ashok Kumar Choudhary, former director general military operations (DGMO) at army headquarters, today took over as general officer commanding (GOC), Bengal area.

He is the first three-star rank officer in the post after it was upgraded.

A Mahar Regiment officer, Lt Gen. Choudhary has served in the army for 38 years. The general officer has a personal and professional interest in studying the border with China.

An alumnus of Sainik School, Tilaiya, and the National Defence Academy, Khadakvasla, he attended the Defence Services Staff College, Wellington, and Long Defence Management Course at Secunderabad.

Lt Gen. Choudhary has held crucial command and staff appointments, including tactical and operational levels of command in the Northeast and Jammu and Kashmir. He has also been deputy director general of the prestigious military operations directorate and additional director general of military intelligence.

He was appointed DGMO after commanding a corps in the western front. He was then responsible for conduct and co-ordination of army operations besides developing operational doctrines and policies for the army.
