Santiniketan ‘killer’ flees cops

Burdwan, Oct. 16: An accused in the murder of a Calcutta lady in Santiniketan escaped from a Burdwan hospital last night when the two jail wardens escorting him were busy filling up forms.

Mangal Sahani, who was arrested in January in connection with the murder of Renu Sarkar, had been taken to the Burdwan Medical College and Hospital’s emergency ward after he complained of stomachache.

Debaprasad Garai and Prahanta Kumar Pal, who had escorted Sahani, were today suspended on the charges of dereliction of duty.

The escape has raised several questions.

A police officer said: “I don’t know why Sahani was brought to the hospital in a private car when there was an ambulance. If the jail authorities had no vehicle, they could have approached district police officers. It also remains a mystery why the matter was reported to the local police station about two hours after Sahani’s escape.”

Sahani is among three persons held for the murder of the Bhowanipore woman, who had a house in Santiniketan.

Sources said a farmer who had drunk pesticide had been brought to the hospital by a group of around 20 people when the wardens were filling up the forms. “Sahani must have used the melee to his advantage,” the officer said.
