Nagaon, Oct. 15: The governing body of central Assam’s Anandaram Dhekiyal Phukan college today proposed disciplinary action against professor Pranjal Hazarika against whom a degree student of neighbouring Nowgong College moved police, accusing him of raping her, three days back.
The 11-member body decided to propose steps according to Assam Services Disciplinary and Appeals Role Act, 1965, in a two hour-long sitting on the matter and later forwarded its proposal to the department of higher education for final approval.
ADP College principal Saifuddin Ahmed today told The Telegraph that steps against the accused have been proposed according to provisions of the act and that could be announced only after formal approval of the higher authority.
Ahmed, however, refused to comment whether the body proposed to dismiss the accused professor from service or suspend him.
On Friday, the professor, who teaches political science in the college, was arrested by Nagaon police on charges of raping a third-year student of Nowgong College when she had gone to his residence for tuition the previous day. The student filed an FIR stating that she was raped and later forced to consume poison.
Interestingly, those close to the victim claimed that the girl had a yearlong illicit relation with the professor.
“Initially she had assumed that the professor was unmarried but when she discovered otherwise, frustration and anger overcame her. The charges of rape and murder attempt could be an outcome of that frustration which we hope investigation might bring to light,” a friend of the girl said.
