Guwahati, Oct. 14: The Assam Cricket Association today suspended promising allrounder Swarupam Purkayastha for three years on charges of “indiscipline” in the Assam A (under-25) selection trials at Silchar recently.
“I regret to announce that the disciplinary sub-committee of the ACA will suspend Swarupam Purkayastha for three years for breach of discipline during the selection camp at Silchar. The explanation he gave against a showcause we have served is also not satisfactory according to the disciplinary sub-committee. He will, however, be eligible to appeal to our governing body,” ACA secretary Bikash Baruah said today. His suspension will come into effect from October 12.
Purkayastha admitted that it was true that he had an altercation with a girl from Silchar, who was his friend on a social network, during his stay. “It was settled between us before the girl turned up at the camp with some youths the next day on the pretext of apologising and it led to an unpleasant situation.”
“Though it was settled amicably at the field too, I was reported and showcaused. I was told that I would be summoned to the disciplinary panel meeting for a hearing, which never happened and the decision was declared today without even informing me. I am going to appeal as I have the right to do so,” he said.
