Sania’s ‘fair’ call

New Delhi: Sania Mirza made good use of her stature to help eliminate the disparity in prize money between the men’s and women’s winners of this year’s National Championship, at DLTA, on Saturday.

Accordingly, Prerna Bhambri, the women’s champion pocketed Rs 1.5 lakh, the amount also won by her male counterpart, Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan.

As per the earlier arrangement, the winner of the women’s singles was to receive Rs 1 lakh.

The change, organisers said, was made at the behest of Sania, who was present at the DLTA on Saturday to give away the trophies.

“Sania suggested the prize money for both men’s and women’s winners should be same as it is done in most of the tournaments across the world. We found it a very valid argument and immediately agreed to it,” said the official.
