Cargo impasse

Calcutta, Oct. 13: Airport warehouses spilled over today and international cargoes had to be kept outside in the rain because of a go-slow by Trinamul-backed employees of a private freight handler.

Around 140 employees of the private agency had started the agitation on Thursday night to press for a salary hike and Puja bonus.

“Things didn’t improve today. Only perishable cargoes were loaded onto aircraft,” an airport official said.

“Tomorrow, we will hold a meeting with the management (of cargo handler Bhadra International) on the legitimate demands of the employees. If the demands are not met, we might go on a complete strike,” said Pradip Sikdar, general secretary of the Trinamul-backed Airports Authority of India Staff Workers’ Union.
