Assam Rifles in semis

ID cup soccer

Nagaon, Oct. 12: Assam Rifles, Tezpur stormed into the semi-finals of the 64th Independence Day Cup all-India invitation football tournament under way at Nurul Amin Stadium here.

The paramilitary outfit tamed home side Radial Club 5-0 in the last quarter-final match today.

In a lacklustre one-sided affair, striker M. Kamei drew first blood in the fifth minute to help the visitors take command.

Midfielder Devendar Singh enhanced the lead with another goal in the 28th minute. The Tezpur outfit led 2-0 during half time.

Into the second session, the Radial men tried to stage a comeback, but could hardly beat the strong opponent defence. D. Chunga fired in the third goal for Assam Rfiles in the 52nd minute while striker Ajit Kumar Singh further consolidated the lead with the fourth goal in the 60th minute.

Bulu Jigdung ruffled the net for the fifth goal in the 72nd minute.

Though the Radial men managed to penetrate the Assam Rifles defence on a few occasions, they could not strike at the target due to the agility of the opponent defenders and custodian.
