Tribute to a lensma

Tribute to a lensman: (L-R) Filmmaker Aparna Sen with Nirja, wife of late cinematographer Ashok Mehta, at a tribute organised by Pailan Film & Television Institute in GD Birla Sabhagar on Thursday; Soumendu Roy, cinematographer for Satyajit Ray’s films, in front of a poster of Mehta on the dais. Aparna recalled her association with Mehta that began with 36 Chowringhee Lane. “I was convinced that I would never find the cinematographer of my dream for 36 Chowringhee Lane. And then Mr Shashi Kapoor (producer of 36 Chowringhee Lane) made me see a film... a conventional commercial story where the camerawork was very unconventional. And I knew Ashok was my dream cinematographer,” said Aparna, who later made Paroma and Sati with him. Mehta was the director of photography for films like Ijaazat, Mandi, Trikal and Bandit Queen. He passed away on August 15 this year. Pictures by Bhubaneswarananda Halder
