Sunday on target

Calcutta: David Sunday scored a splendid hat-trick to help Mohammedan Sporting return to winning ways in the CFL Premier Division on Wednesday.

Mohammedan Sporting thrashed West Bengal Police 3-0 at the Salt Lake Stadium. Both the teams played scrappy football from the outset. That the first 40 minutes of the first half didn’t yield any opening was proof enough of the mindless football the sides played.

It was in the 41st minute that Sunday scored his first goal via a penalty. Manoj Das fouled the Nigerian inside the box and the striker calmly converted from the spot. In the second half, with the introduction of experienced striker Ashim Biswas in the 55th minute, Mohammedan Sporting showed more purpose to their endeavour.

In the 56th minute, Ashim could have doubled the lead for Mohammedan Sporting had Police goalkeeper Wasimuddin Ahmed not put in a brilliant save.

Nine minutes later, Sunday squandered an easy chance. After making a run on the left, Ashim rounded off Wasimuddin to pass the ball to Sunday. But the Nigerian striker’s weak right-footer was easily cleared by a defender.

A minute later, Sunday made amends when he made a rippling run on the right before shooting home a powerful right-footer. Sunday completed his hat-trick in injury time. Wasimuddin fisted away an Ashim header off a Mohammed Muktar corner.
