Odisha club enter semi-finals

Mangaldoi, Oct. 10: Samaleswari Sporting FC, Odisha today blanked Food Corporation of India (FCI), Guwahati 4-0 to storm into the semi-finals of the ongoing 33rd Amba Medhi invitation football tournament at Mangaldoi Stadium here.

In a one-sided affair where the Odisha outfit dominated the proceedings with a comparatively better gameplan, the Guwahati side started with few attacks, only to be tackled aptly by the opponents.

Skipper Suresh Kujur drew first blood in the 35th minute with a power-packed shot of a pass from the midfield by Sangkha Marandi from inside the penalty area to catch FCI glovesman Gobinda Boro unawares.

Negiren recruit striker Harison Chukwu increased the lead just two minutes later, making no mistake in anticipating a calculated pass from Marandi. Chukwu struck again off a Kujur pass in the 73rd minute to make it 3-0.Gokul Urang fired in the fourth goal taking advantage of custodian Boro far ahead of his area of control to dribble past the defence into the box before pushing the ball in.

Though the FCI men made umpteen forays into the Samaleswari territory in the second half, the latter’s defence was just too strong for the Guwahati men.

Lamlai Youth Progressive Society, Manipur will meet Green Valley SC, Guwahati in the first semi-final on Friday.
