Jorhat, Oct. 9: A man looted about Rs 5 lakh from the Dena Bank near Bisturam Barooah Hall at AT Road here this afternoon, claiming that he had a bomb in his bag.
Police sources said an investigation was on and police are likely to question the staff of the bank as there were about eight employees present when he committed the crime.
The man, wearing a cap, entered the bank on the second floor of the building around 4pm. He told the employee at the counter that he was carrying a remote-controlled bomb in his bag, which he would detonate if they did not hand over all the money immediately.
Frightened at his threat, the manager of the bank directed the cashier to give him all the money. The person was inside the bank for about 14 minutes and there were no customer present during that time.
The police said the man had also directed the manager to switch off the CCTV camera in the bank. However, only the light of the camera went off but the whole incident was recorded.
The police said since the man was wearing a cap, which nearly covered with his face, it was difficult to identify him.
“We suspect the involvement of some insider in the incident. An investigation is on,” an official at Jorhat police station said.
