Left rally over land today

Ranchi, Oct. 8: Left parties will come together at Morabadi grounds in the state capital tomorrow noon during a rally to protest against displacement caused by acquisition of land by the state government and industry.

CPI general secretary A.B. Bardhan and senior leader Atul Kumar Anjan have already reached the state capital, while senior leaders of CPM, MCC, Forward Bloc, RSP and Jharkhand Disom Party (JDP) will join the rally that is expected to draw a crowd of 10,000-15,000.

“The Centre and various state governments are blatantly misusing the Land Acquisition Act of 1894. The Ambani brothers alone have acquired over 1.5 lakh hectares across the country. Builders and other corporate houses have also taken over large portions of fertile agricultural land everywhere. During the last three years, around 43 farmers have succumbed to police bullets in UP, MP, Rajasthan, Bihar, Karnataka, Haryana and other states while protesting against land acquisition,” said Bardhan at a news conference.

He added that Jharkhand government has signed over 107 MoUs with various industrial houses. Once the MoUs become functional, more than one-third of the land available in Jharkhand will be occupied by industries, which would lead to the displacement of over 1.10 lakh families, mostly of poor tribals and marginal farmers, he said.
