Model tag planned for Gua hamlets

Jamshedpur, Oct. 9: The state forest department has planned to develop six hamlets in West Singhbhum that have borne the scar of the Gua police firing for over three decades into adarsh gram or model villages.

On August 8, 1980, eight tribals were killed in the incident that has gone down as one of the first instances of martyrdom in the name of a separate state for Jharkhand.

Divisional forest officer of Saranda K.K. Tiwary told The Telegraph they had sent a proposal to the higher authorities department today for its approval and release of funds.

“There are six villages under the Gua range where people had participated in the revolutionary protest rally in August 1980 and eight persons were killed in police firing,” said the DFO.

The villages are Jojoguttu, Baihatu, Hatnaburu, Kumbia, Churgi and Koaiburu.

Tiwary said each village would get an adorned gate at its entrance.

“A recreation hall, children parks, pathways and schools will be set up in each village. This apart, the students will be provided opportunity for higher education and the unemployed youth will be given vocational training,” he said.

Apart from the eight tribals who were killed in front of Gua mines hospital, four others died after sustaining injuries. Five policemen were also killed by tribals.
