Mangaldoi, Oct. 8: Assam State Electricity Board SC, Guwahati, entered the semi-finals of the Amba Medhi all-India invitation football tournament, defeating Rhino Assam Regiment SC, Tezpur 1-0 in today’s quarter-final encounter at Mangaldoi Stadium here today.
In a keen contest that started with both sides playing a strategic game, striker Khirod Das ruffled the net for the only salvo of the match in the 28th minute.
He made best use of a calculated cross from the right flank by the seasoned forward Nitu Narzary to shoot it in from the left flank.
Conceding the goal, the military outfit put forth their best efforts to find an equaliser but could not beat the powermen’s strong defence.
ASEB glovesman Daoga Brahma also made few brilliant saves to deny the opponents a breakthrough.
Atul Basumatary took the only shot for Rhino Assam Regiment in the 52nd minute.
However, his shot from almost the midfield rebounded from the crosspiece.
Khirod Das got another opportunity in the 64th minute but his shot from the top of the box missed the woodwork by few inches. Lamlai Youth Progressive Society of Manipur will meet Sambaleswar Sporting Club of Orissa in the first semi-final on Wednesday.
