Mangaldoi, Oct. 7: Manipur Lamlai Youth Progressive Society defeated Thulunga Sports Club, Gossaigaon 2-0 in the first quarter-final of the 33rd Amba Medhi invitation football tournament at Mangaldoi Stadium here today.
In an evenly-contested match, Gossaigaon had themselves to blame as they faltered inside the danger box too often.
Manipur custodian Kh. Nanao Singh came up with some brilliant saves.
In the 32nd minute, Lamlai striker E. Amit Kumar shot the ball over Thulunga goalkeeper Rahul Basumatary’s head to make it 1-0.
In the 64th minute, playmaker Johney Singh, in a solo effort, caught an advancing Rahul on the wrong foot and scored, sealing a semifinals’ berth for the team.
Thulunga tried hard but could not reduce the margin.
ASEB Sports Club, Guwahati, will take on Rhino Assam Regiment, Tezpur, in the second quarter-final tomorrow.
Chess: Rintu Brahma scored six points in six rounds to clinch the title of P.C. Borooah Sunday Chess Tournament (3rd edition) held at P.C. Borooah Chess Academy here today. In the last round, Rintu beat Simran Ahmed.
Chiraranjan Bhuyan scored 4.5 points for second position. Simran, Prachurjya Gayan, L. Biren Singh, Debabrata Das also scored 4.5 points, but were placed third, fourth, fifth and sixth according to their tie-break scores.
