Islamabad, Oct. 7: Pakistan’s security forces today stopped an anti-US rally led by cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan from entering a volatile tribal region bordering Afghanistan.

Khan and at least 5,000 supporters, who included some American anti-war activists, wanted to go to Kotkai village in South Waziristan to protest against US drone strikes but were stopped for fear of attacks by militants.

Khan, the leader of the Pakistan Tereek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, said he was able to accomplish the mission of drawing the world’s attention to the “unjust” US drone strikes.

“Nobody knows who were the people killed by these (drone) strikes... their names have never been published. Are not they humans and is it not our duty to ensure that these strikes are abandoned?” Khan asked.

“We came all the way to Waziristan. Soon, I will call on you to come to Islamabad,” PTI quoted Khan as saying, referring to his party’s assessment that it would come to power after the polls.

The US today issued a fresh alert for its citizens in Islamabad, asking them to avoid going to some parts of the city because of possible terrorist attacks.
