A 35-year-old trader has complained of being robbed of his gold chain while he was sleeping by an open window in a first-floor room of his Salt Lake home early on Sunday.
Police suspect the thief reached the first-floor window of the room where Soumitra Biswas was sleeping with his wife and children by standing on a stool placed atop a garage. When cops visited GD121, the stool was still on the garage roof.
“My brother woke up around 2.30am feeling a tug at his neck and saw an outstretched hand from the window trying to take away the chain. He shouted out but the thief had by then snatched the chain and run away,” said Soumitra’s brother Somen Biswas, who lives on the ground floor of the two-storeyed house.
The trader, his brother added, saw the thief jump from the stool, scale the 6ft-high boundary wall and flee.
“It was scary. My brother and his family were trembling in fear and could not sleep the rest of the night.”
The family lodged a complaint with Bidhannagar South police station around 3.30am.
“The height of the first-floor window from the garage roof is around 8ft. The thief easily got access to the window by standing on the stool he had brought with him. We have started a probe based on the evidences,” said a senior officer.
Sunday’s incident was the third instance of theft in the township in the past five days.
While cash and gold ornaments worth over Rs 10 lakh were stolen from a house in FD Block on Wednesday, a laptop, wallet and a cellphone were reported missing from a house in EC block last Friday. In both cases, no one was arrested.
“We have got some vital clues in the thefts in FD and EC blocks. A team of officers is in Bihar in search of the domestic help, the prime suspect behind the theft, who used to work at the FD Block house. We hope to crack the case and recover the stolen items soon,” said an officer.
Fatal fall: Radhika Shaw, a 21-year-old woman, died after she fell from the roof of her three-storey house in Behala on Sunday. Police said some labourers saw her jump off the roof.
