Job joy at BIT-Mesra

Ranchi, Oct. 6: The ongoing economic slowdown has had little impact on BIT-Mesra’s placement figures with an encouraging 80 per cent of students bagging jobs so far.

Out of the thousand-plus students who will pass out from the cradle’s main campus near Ranchi and extension centres across the country in 2013, over 800 have already been placed. The institute hopes to achieve jobs for all by the time the placement season ends.

“There is literally no effect of the so-called slump in the economy. At least the placement figures do not suggest so. Eighty per cent of our students have bagged good jobs,” BIT-Mesra’s assistant training and placement officer Prabhat Pankaj told The Telegraph.

The big names that had queued up at BIT-Mesra this year include IT majors Microsoft, Oracle, Cognizant Technology Solutions and IBM, besides Tata Motors, Caterpillar, ACC and Samsung, among others.

The officials maintained that while the minimum salary offered was about Rs 4 lakh per annum, the maximum was a healthy Rs 16 lakh per annum so far.

However, they would not provide details about which company offered the highest salary as the placement season was still on.

“Many more companies will come calling till October 18-20. There will be a break during Durga Puja, after which the recruitment drive will start again and continue through November and December. Many students, who have already been placed, may get picked up by other companies as well. Finally, they will join the company they like,” Pankaj said.

BIT-Mesra had witnessed a very successful placement season in 2012 also with over 100 headhunters lining up, which resulted in a bounty of 1,906 job offers. The average salary jumped to Rs 5.05 lakh per annum while the highest national offer was Rs 16 lakh per annum. The international package touched an enviable $119,000 (Rs 62 lakh) per annum.

This year, the placement drive for students of BE (bachelor of engineering), ME (masters of engineering), MTech, MCA, MSc, MBA etc kicked off from the first week of August. The students need to register themselves online with the training and placement office. They may attend presentations made by different organisations and accordingly, decide to enrol for the respective selection process.

Once 85 per cent of students of a particular branch are placed, a second opportunity may be provided.

The placements are open for students of BIT-Mesra’s main campus besides extension centres at Patna, Deoghar, Lalpur (Ranchi), Calcutta, Allahabad, Noida and Jaipur.
